EssentialsX is the maintained, actively developed continuation of the original Essentials plugin, and it is usually the very first plugin installed on a new Bukkit-based server, adding well over a hundred commands covering teleportation, homes, kits, and a basic economy.
Step 1: Download EssentialsX
Get it from the official EssentialsX site or its SpigotMC page, matching your server's Minecraft version. EssentialsX requires a Bukkit-API server (Spigot, Paper, or similar), not vanilla.
Step 2: Install the jar
Drop EssentialsX.jar into your server's plugins folder and restart.
Step 3: Add the optional add-on jars
EssentialsX ships as a set of separate jars beyond the core plugin, install whichever ones you actually want:
- EssentialsXSpawn — spawn point management and
/spawn. - EssentialsXProtect — basic block and area protection.
- EssentialsXChat — chat formatting.
- EssentialsXDiscord — Discord integration.
Each goes in the plugins folder the same way as the core jar.
Step 4: Configure config.yml
On first run, EssentialsX generates plugins/Essentials/config.yml with extensive options: whether teleport requests need confirmation, starting balance for the economy, kit definitions, and more. A command generator can help build out specific EssentialsX commands correctly if you are unsure of the exact syntax.
Key commands to know
/sethomeand/home— players set and return to a personal location./warp— server-defined named locations, set with/setwarpby staff./tpaand/tpaccept— teleport requests between players./kit— predefined item sets, configured inkits.yml./eco— economy management for staff.
Pairing it with other plugins
EssentialsX's built-in economy exposes itself through Vault, the standard economy API most other plugins (shops, job plugins, and similar) hook into. Install Vault alongside EssentialsX if you plan to add any economy-dependent plugin later.
